# What is on the money in Norway?

**The money in Norway: Norwegian krone (NOK)**

The series introduced from 2017 has an abstract, pixelated reverse on every note, generated from a design competition entry that used the pixel size to encode wind speed at sea. It is the most visually radical national currency design of the century so far, and it took the theme of the sea rather than a set of people. Norway also has no portraits on its current notes at all.

## The unusual part

The reverses are abstract pixel art. The pixel proportions encode wind speed.

## The practical facts

- **Survives a wash?:** Not reliably. Paper notes disintegrate when soaked.
- **Can a blind person tell them apart?:** Yes — the denominations differ in size, which is the simplest and most reliable tactile cue there is.
