## What actually happens

Adding bleach at the same time as detergent means the bleach spends itself oxidising the detergent rather than the stain, so both are wasted. The real hazard is that some detergents and stain removers contain ammonia or ammonium compounds, which puts the classic chloramine reaction inside a washing machine. Washing machines have a bleach dispenser that releases separately for precisely this reason.
