## What actually happens

Engine oils sold to a common specification are required to be miscible, because topping up with whatever is on a petrol station shelf is the situation the standards were written for. Mixing a 5W-30 with a 5W-40 gives something in between and is entirely acceptable as a top-up. Mixing synthetic with mineral is also fine — "synthetic" describes the base oil, not an incompatibility.
