# Can you compost citrus peel?

**It depends: Yes in an ordinary compost heap, in moderation. Not in a wormery.**

Citrus peel composts perfectly well in a normal heap; it is simply slow, because the oils and the waxy rind resist breakdown. The old advice that citrus acidity harms compost does not hold up — the acidity is neutralised quickly as decomposition proceeds. Worm bins are the real exception: the d-limonene in citrus oil is genuinely irritating to worms, and large amounts will drive them away from that part of the bin. Chop peel small and keep it to a modest fraction of what goes in.

## How to do it properly

1. Chop peel into small pieces so it breaks down at the same rate as everything else.
2. Keep it a modest share of total volume rather than a whole bin of it.
3. Balance with plenty of brown material — cardboard, dry leaves, shredded paper.

- Whole peels can sit intact for a year or more.
- Worm bins react badly to citrus in quantity.
