The response that is protective depends on species and motive, which is why blanket advice is unhelpful: a surprised brown or grizzly bear that makes contact is defensive, and playing dead is the recommended response, while a black bear that presses an approach is better met with noise and resistance. In either case, running triggers pursuit and cannot outpace an animal that reaches 50 kilometres per hour. Most encounters never reach contact at all — making noise while walking, travelling in groups and storing food away from a camp prevent the surprise that causes defensive attacks.
