# How much carbon dioxide can you breathe before it kills you?

**How much carbon dioxide can you breathe before it kills you?: Above about 5 per cent you get breathless within minutes; above 10 per cent, unconsciousness follows quickly.**

Hours at 1-2 per cent; minutes at 7-10 per cent; seconds to a minute above 15 per cent

Ordinary air contains around 0.04 per cent carbon dioxide, and the body uses its level as the signal to breathe. Rising concentration therefore produces a very different experience from running out of oxygen: instead of quiet hypoxia, there is air hunger, pounding headache and panic, because the sensor is working exactly as designed. At around 1 per cent people become drowsy, at 3 per cent breathing roughly doubles and thinking slows, at 5 per cent breathlessness arrives within minutes, and by 7-10 per cent unconsciousness follows in minutes. This is why sealed spaces fail on carbon dioxide before they fail on oxygen, and why the improvised scrubber on Apollo 13 was the crew's actual emergency rather than the missing power. Confined spaces, silage pits, wells and fermentation tanks accumulate it invisibly, and it is denser than air so it pools at the bottom.
