A human cannot pass through one. The sperm whale is the only species with a throat large enough, and even then the stomach is a sequence of muscular chambers with no air, strong acid and constant crushing contractions. The famous 2021 case of a lobster diver off Cape Cod involved a humpback closing its mouth around him for perhaps thirty to forty seconds before spitting him out — he was in the mouth, never swallowed, and was released alive. The Jonah story is a story; the biology does not allow the version people imagine. > Baleen whales physically cannot swallow a person. The one documented modern case involved being held briefly in a humpback's mouth, not swallowed. > Physiology, not instruction. Every figure here is a population range under particular conditions, and individual variation is large — temperature, exertion, fitness and health move all of them substantially. Swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the flow, then come in. - [How long do you have to escape a burning house?](https://atoneplace.net/could-you-survive/house-fire/) — Around three minutes from the alarm sounding in a modern furnished home. - [Can you survive a tsunami?](https://atoneplace.net/could-you-survive/tsunami/) — Yes, by moving inland and uphill immediately — 30 centimetres of moving water can knock an adult off their feet. - [How long can you survive in a sealed container?](https://atoneplace.net/could-you-survive/sealed-container/) — Carbon dioxide becomes dangerous long before oxygen runs out — a few hours in a cubic metre of air. ## Common questions ### Could you survive inside a whale?
