Buoyancy therefore stops a person at about waist height, and there is no mechanism by which the mixture can pull anyone under. What makes it dangerous is viscosity: the mixture behaves like a liquid under slow force and like a solid under sudden force, so yanking a leg out fast creates a vacuum and requires enormous force, while slow movements let water flow back in. Real deaths in quicksand and tidal mud are caused by the rising tide, by hypothermia, or by exhaustion in someone trapped for hours — not by disappearing beneath the surface. Leaning back to spread weight and working the legs free slowly is what physically works. ## What changes the figure - Human density is about half that of quicksand, so floating is automatic - Slow movement lets water flow back around a trapped limb; fast pulling does the opposite - The real hazards are the incoming tide and exposure, not submersion > The film version — sinking out of sight — is not physically possible.
