During that time the doors become progressively impossible to open, because water pressure outside rises with depth and a door with even half a metre of water against it takes far more force than a person can apply. Electric windows generally keep working for a short period, and this is what escape research consistently identifies as the route out. Once the cabin is fully flooded, pressure equalises and a door can be opened again — but by then the occupants have been underwater for a long time.
