Winter interior temperatures reach -40 °C and below, at which exposed skin freezes in minutes and wet clothing becomes lethal rather than uncomfortable. The specific Arctic hazards are sea ice that can break up, whiteouts that remove any sense of direction, and a winter in which the sun does not rise for weeks. Food is available — marine mammals, fish and caribou — but a diet of very lean meat alone causes protein poisoning, which is why traditional Arctic diets are built around fat.
