With circulation intact but no oxygen coming in, useful consciousness lasts on the order of a minute for an untrained person at rest, and far less during exertion. Irreversible neuronal damage generally begins around four to six minutes and becomes extensive beyond ten. The urge to breathe is driven by rising carbon dioxide rather than falling oxygen, which is why hyperventilating first is so dangerous: it delays the urge without adding meaningful oxygen, and people black out with no warning.
