Several of the answers are the opposite of what the date on the packet suggests, because a great many printed dates are regulatory rather than biological. ## Use by and best before are not the same thing Use-by is a safety date and applies to things that become unsafe rather than merely unpleasant — it should be respected. Best-before is about quality, and most food is fine well past it. Conflating the two is responsible for an enormous amount of avoidable waste, and for occasional genuine risk in the other direction. ## Does not expire - [Honey](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-expire/honey/) — No. Honey does not spoil — edible honey has been recovered from Egyptian tombs. Crystallisation is not spoilage. - [Salt](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-expire/salt/) — No. Salt is a mineral, and the date on the packet is a labelling convention rather than a biological fact. - [Sugar](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-expire/sugar/) — No. Sugar is itself a preservative — at that concentration nothing can grow in it. - [Bottled water](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-expire/bottled-water/) — The water does not expire. The dates are about quality only. - [Canned food](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-expire/canned-food/) — An intact, undamaged can is safe more or less indefinitely. No. Honey is too low in water and too acidic for microbes to grow, and edible honey has been recovered from ancient tombs. Crystallisation is not spoilage — warming redissolves it. ### What is the difference between use by and best before? Use-by is a safety date on food that becomes unsafe; best-before is about quality and food is usually fine past it. ### Does bottled water expire? The water does not. The date refers to the plastic, which can leach flavour into the water over long storage, especially if kept warm.
