In December 2023 Kyrgyzstan straightened the sun's rays, which had been wavy since 1992, after parliamentarians argued that the curved version resembled a sunflower — a plant associated with dependence on Russia in the debate. The change was small but legally a new flag, and images from before and after are both in wide circulation. The tunduk at the centre is the smoke hole of a yurt seen from below, which makes it one of the few flags depicting a view rather than an object. The forty rays and the forty tribes come from the Epic of Manas, one of the longest oral poems in the world.

## What the colours mean

*Flag laws usually specify a Pantone chip, a CMYK mix or just a colour name. Converting any of those to sRGB is lossy, which is why published hex values disagree.*
