# The flag of Panama

**The flag of Panama: Quartered: white with a blue star at the top hoist, plain red at the top fly, plain blue at the bottom hoist, and white with a red star at the bottom fly.**

The quartered design is a peace treaty in graphic form: red and blue for the two parties that had fought the Thousand Days' War, each given a quarter, with white between them. It was designed in 1903 by María de la Ossa de Amador, whose husband became the first president, after her son's earlier design was rejected for resembling the US flag too closely. The quartering is also unusually rare — very few national flags divide into four rectangles. It was formally adopted in 1925.

## What the colours mean

*Flag laws usually specify a Pantone chip, a CMYK mix or just a colour name. Converting any of those to sRGB is lossy, which is why published hex values disagree.*
