Tunisia's flag inverts the Turkish arrangement — the crescent and star are red inside a white disc, rather than white on red — a distinction that reflects its history as an autonomous Ottoman province. It was created in 1831 by Al-Husayn II ibn Mahmud after the Battle of Navarino, which makes it one of the older national flags still in use. The exact geometry was only specified by law in 1999. The white disc is sometimes read as the sun.
