The screen serif, drawn alongside Verdana for the same problem: serifs are thin, and thin things vanish on a low-resolution screen. Carter solved it with a large x-height and sturdy, blunt serifs. Its numerals are old-style — they sit below the baseline and vary in height, like lowercase letters — which is unusual for a screen face and is the quickest way to identify it.
