The 220 steps from the railway station to the terrace were, until 2003, the only way to finish the journey; panoramic lifts and escalators were installed that year and most visitors now use them. The steps remain open and are the quicker route when the escalators are busy. The statue itself is 30 m tall on an 8 m pedestal, and its outstretched arms span 28 m. The train from Cosme Velho climbs 3.8 km through the Tijuca forest and is a century old.
