The Yale Bright Star Catalogue lists 9,096 stars brighter than magnitude 6.5, which is the conventional naked-eye limit for a good observer under a dark sky. You never see them all: half are below the horizon, and stars near the horizon are dimmed by the atmosphere, so from one spot on one night the realistic figure is about 2,000 to 2,500. From a suburban garden it collapses to a few hundred, and from a city centre to a few dozen.
