**What is a Carpet made of?: Face fibre tufted through a woven backing and locked in place with latex — three layers, two of which you never see.**

The distinctive smell of new carpet is 4-phenylcyclohexene, a by-product of the styrene-butadiene latex used in the backing, and it dissipates over days with ventilation. Carpet is a difficult product to recycle precisely because the three layers are bonded together with a fourth material, so separating nylon face fibre from polypropylene backing needs dedicated processing that only exists in a few places. The label distinction worth knowing is cut pile versus loop: loop pile resists footprint marks and wears well in halls, but a pulled loop runs, which is why it is a poor choice in a house with a cat.
