The active does more work overnight than in the morning: sweat production is lowest at night, so an antiperspirant applied to clean dry skin before bed has time to form its plugs and is measurably more effective. "Aluminium-free" products are deodorants, not antiperspirants, and will not reduce wetness at all. The long-running claims linking aluminium salts to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease have not been supported by the reviews carried out by major cancer research bodies, though the scientific committees continue to look at systemic exposure. Stopping an antiperspirant often produces a few weeks of apparently worse odour as the skin's bacterial population re-establishes.
