--- title: "Woven carbon fibre composite — density, melting point and prop" description: "Woven carbon fibre composite has a density of 1,550 kg/m³ (1,500–1,600). Melting point, strength, conductivity, what it is used for, and whether it floats, rusts or " url: https://atoneplace.net/material/carbon-fiber-woven/ site: "At One Place" --- # Woven carbon fibre composite **Density of woven carbon fibre composite: 1,550 kg/m³ (1,500–1,600)** 1.55 g/cm³ · 96.8 lb/ft³ The familiar chequerboard weave, and it is roughly a third as strong as unidirectional laminate of the same weight because half the fibres run the wrong way for any given load and every fibre is kinked where it crosses another. It is chosen for drape and for looks: a woven cloth conforms to a curved mould where unidirectional tape will not. Most visible "carbon fibre" on cars is a single cosmetic weave ply over glass fibre or plastic, contributing nothing structural. ## Properties - **Density:** 1,550 kg/m³ (1,500–1,600) — 1.55 g/cm³ - **Tensile strength:** 600–900 MPa - **Young's modulus:** 60 GPa - **Floats in water:** No - **Magnetic:** No ## What it is used for - Car body panels and interior trim - Drone and camera gimbal frames - Sports equipment shells - Cosmetic and visible-weave parts ## How it compares *Water is 1,000 kg/m³. Anything with a shorter bar than water floats in it.* - air: 1.2 kg/m³ - expanded polystyrene foam: 20 kg/m³ - rigid polyurethane foam: 40 kg/m³ - Water — the float line: 1,000 kg/m³ - woven carbon fibre composite: 1,550 kg/m³ - tungsten: 19,250 kg/m³ - gold: 19,300 kg/m³ - platinum: 21,450 kg/m³ *Water is 1,000 kg/m³. Woven carbon fibre composite contains no iron, so it cannot rust. Whether it degrades depends on the material, not on oxidation. ## Is it magnetic? Woven carbon fibre composite is not a metal and has no ferromagnetic response. ## Common questions ### What is the density of woven carbon fibre composite? 1,550 kg/m³ (1,500–1,600), or 1.55 g/cm³. ### Does woven carbon fibre composite float? No. At 1,550 kg/m³ it is denser than water. ### Is woven carbon fibre composite magnetic? Woven carbon fibre composite is not a metal and has no ferromagnetic response. ## Related pages - [Does woven carbon fibre composite float?](https://atoneplace.net/does-it-float/carbon-fiber-woven/) - [Unidirectional carbon fibre composite](https://atoneplace.net/material/carbon-fiber-ud/) - [Fibreglass (GRP)](https://atoneplace.net/material/fiberglass/) - [Asphalt (hot-mix)](https://atoneplace.net/material/asphalt/) ## Sources - Typical range compiled from manufacturer specifications — At One Place (/about/)
