The ninety-minute figure that every sleep calculator is built on is the average of a wide distribution, and it is not even stable within one person across one night. ## The stages *Proportions are for a healthy adult across a whole night. They shift substantially with age.* | Stage | What it is | Share of the night | | --- | --- | --- | | N1 | The transition into sleep. Easily woken from, and people woken here often deny they were asleep. | About 5% | | N2 | Established light sleep, marked by sleep spindles and K-complexes on an EEG. | About 45–55% | | N3 | Deep or slow-wave sleep. Hardest to wake from, and the stage sleep pressure is discharged in. | About 15–25% | | REM | Rapid eye movement. Vivid dreaming, near-total muscle atonia, brain activity close to waking. | About 20–25% | ## The night is not made of identical cycles Deep N3 sleep is concentrated in the first third of the night and REM in the last third. So the first cycle may hold forty minutes of slow-wave sleep and almost no REM, while the fifth holds almost no slow-wave sleep and a REM period that can run past half an hour. The cycles also lengthen: the first is often nearer 70 or 80 minutes and later ones nearer 100 or 110. That is why counting back in equal ninety-minute blocks accumulates error. By the fourth boundary a calculator can be an hour away from where your night actually is, and it has no way of knowing which direction. ## So is the advice useless? No — just weaker than it is usually stated. Waking out of deep N3 sleep genuinely does produce sleep inertia, the heavy disoriented feeling that can take half an hour to clear, and waking from light sleep does not. What no calculator can do is tell you when your N3 periods are. The reliable version of the advice is the boring one: keep the same schedule daily, get enough total sleep, and the alarm mostly lands somewhere harmless. > Sleep-cycle alarm apps that claim to detect your stage from phone accelerometer data are inferring movement, not sleep stage.
