# Crossed grain (certified gluten free)

**Crossed grain (certified gluten free): Independently certified to contain no more than 20 parts per million of gluten.**

## What it looks like

An ear of wheat inside a circle with a vertical bar or cross through it, usually with a registration number beneath.

## What it means

The 20 ppm threshold is the international standard for a gluten-free claim, and it is a limit rather than an absence — testing cannot reliably confirm zero, and 20 ppm is the level below which coeliac patients in clinical studies do not react. The licensed crossed-grain mark carries a registration number tying the product to an audited manufacturer, which is the difference between it and a plain printed "gluten free" claim, though that claim is itself legally defined in the EU and US. Oats are the recurring complication: gluten-free oats are certified against contamination during growing and milling, but a minority of coeliac patients react to oats themselves.

| Vegan Society sunflower | Registered with the Vegan Society: no animal ingredients and no animal testing at any stage. |
