## What it means

Mandatory on packaged food under the Indian food safety regulations, and unusually strict by international standards: eggs count as non-vegetarian, so an egg-containing product cannot carry the green mark. Dairy is permitted. The mark is specific to India and has no legal meaning elsewhere, though it appears on exported products; a European or US "suitable for vegetarians" claim allows eggs and follows different rules entirely.
