## What it means

Wet cleaning is water and specialist detergents in machines that control agitation, temperature and moisture in the drying and finishing steps far more tightly than a household washer can. It is the main alternative to solvent cleaning as perchloroethylene is phased down, and it handles the water-based stains — perspiration, drink, food — that dry cleaning barely touches. The symbol is an instruction to a professional: a W on the label alongside a crossed-out washtub does not mean the garment can go in your machine on a delicate cycle.

| Do not bleach | No bleach of any kind, chlorine or oxygen. |
