# Markdown table generator

Turn CSV or tab-separated data into a formatted Markdown table.

## How it works

Paste CSV, tab-separated or pasted spreadsheet data and get a Markdown table, with columns padded so the source stays readable.

Pasting directly from a spreadsheet gives tab-separated values, which is why tab is the default delimiter. Excel and Sheets both put TSV on the clipboard regardless of what the file format is.

Column alignment is set with colons in the separator row — left, right or centre. Padding the columns is purely cosmetic and does not affect rendering, but it makes the raw Markdown readable in a diff, which is the reason to bother.

Pipes inside cell content are escaped, since an unescaped one silently splits the cell and produces a broken table.

## Common questions

### How do you align columns in a Markdown table?

With colons in the separator row: :--- for left, ---: for right, :---: for centre.

### What happens if my data contains a pipe?

It has to be escaped as \| or it splits the cell. This tool escapes them automatically.
