How many tiles a floor or wall needs, including cuts and breakage.

## How it works

Works out how many tiles cover an area, including the waste allowance. Enter the area or the room dimensions and the tile size.

The waste allowance is not padding. Every tile meeting a wall gets cut, the offcut is usually unusable, and some tiles break during cutting. Ten per cent is the working minimum for a straight layout in a simple rectangular room. Diagonal or herringbone layouts generate far more offcuts and want fifteen to twenty. Rooms with alcoves, pillars or many corners want more again.

Buy the whole quantity in one batch. Tiles are fired in batches and the shade varies measurably between them \u2014 a replacement box bought months later frequently does not match, which is also why keeping a few spares matters more than with most materials.

## Common questions

### How much extra tile should I buy?

10% for a straight layout in a simple room, 15\u201320% for diagonal or herringbone, and more for rooms with many corners or alcoves.

### Why buy tiles all at once?

Shade varies between firing batches. A box bought later often will not match, and the difference shows once laid.
