The common cold is caused by viral infection, most often a rhinovirus, and no amount of cold or damp produces a virus that was not already present. Controlled experiments in which volunteers were chilled and then exposed to cold viruses have generally found no meaningful increase in infection rates from the chilling itself. What is true is that colds are seasonal, and the explanations for that are about behaviour and about the virus rather than the person: people spend more time indoors together in winter, indoor air is drier, and some respiratory viruses survive and transmit better in cold dry air. There is also modest evidence that cooling the nasal passages slightly reduces local immune response, which might make an existing exposure more likely to take hold — but that is a modifier, not a cause. Being cold and wet is unpleasant and, in the extreme, dangerous for other reasons entirely.
