Photosynthesis would stop immediately once darkness arrived, collapsing the base of nearly every food chain within weeks to months. Surface temperatures would fall below 0 °C within about a week and continue downward, reaching perhaps -70 °C within a year as the atmosphere radiated its heat away, eventually cold enough for the atmosphere itself to begin condensing. If the Sun's mass vanished along with its light, Earth would leave its orbit on a straight tangential path, and the change in gravity would arrive at the same moment as the darkness because gravity propagates at the speed of light.
