Natural cork is tree bark and composts slowly but completely, and several charities and wine merchants run collection schemes that turn it into flooring and insulation. Kerbside recycling has no route for it — the pieces are too small and too light for the sorting line. Plastic stoppers and metal screw caps are different materials with different answers: screw caps are aluminium and recycle with metals if collected in a can, plastic stoppers go in general waste. Cork is also genuinely useful in the garden as a mulch component and as pot drainage. Local collection points come and go, so find out what is running in your area before saving a sackful.

## How to prepare it

1. Separate natural cork from plastic stoppers — they feel and cut differently.
2. Collect them in a jar until there are enough to hand in.
