Usable furniture is in demand: reuse charities collect sofas and beds free and pass them on, though upholstered items must still carry the fire safety label to be resold in the UK. Without that label the same sofa becomes bulky waste. Wooden furniture goes to the wood skip at a household waste centre and is chipped for board or biomass, as long as it is not treated or painted with anything the site excludes. Councils charge modestly for bulky collections, and that fee is invariably less than a fly-tipping fine.

## How to prepare it

1. Check the fire label is still attached before offering upholstery to a charity.
2. Dismantle flat-pack items — they take a fraction of the space.
3. Separate metal fittings if the wood is going to the wood skip.
