Green garden waste goes to open windrow composting, which handles grass, leaves, hedge trimmings and small branches. Soil and turf are heavy and often excluded because they blunt the shredders and add nothing; large branches and treated timber are excluded outright. Diseased material is a judgement call — municipal composting reaches temperatures that kill most pathogens, whereas a home heap does not, so honey fungus and blighted potato haulms are better taken away than composted at home. ## How to prepare it

2. Cut branches short enough to fit without forcing the lid.
3. Mix grass with woody material at home so it does not turn into a slimy anaerobic layer.
