General waste bin

A filament lamp is soft lead or borosilicate glass with a wire filament and a metal cap, and it neither melts with bottle glass nor qualifies as electrical waste, so it falls through every recycling route into general waste. Wrap it so it does not cut a bag or a hand. Halogen capsules are the same disposal answer with a hotter working life. If a household waste centre near you has a lamp bank that accepts all types, use it, since that is a genuine local variation worth taking advantage of.

## How to prepare it

1. Wrap in paper or put it back in the box before binning.
2. Let a halogen cool completely first.

- Never put light bulbs in the kerbside glass or mixed recycling bin — the glass composition is wrong and the metal cap is a contaminant.
