# Where does it go?

98 things and where they actually go. Each page gives the reason for the route rather than only the route, because that is what transfers when your local service differs.

## The one that matters most

Lithium batteries and disposable vapes are the single most consequential item in this list. Crushed in a collection truck or at a sorting facility they can enter thermal runaway, and battery fires are now among the leading causes of fires at waste facilities. They never belong in any household bin — kerbside recycling included.

## Shop or manufacturer take-back

## Household waste recycling centre

## Pharmacy

- [Medicines and tablets](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/medicines/) — Take them back to a pharmacy. Not the bin, and — with a short list of exceptions — not the toilet.
- [Asthma inhalers](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/inhalers/) — Pharmacy take-back. The propellant in a metered-dose inhaler is a potent greenhouse gas.

## Bulky or special collection

## General waste bin

- [Polystyrene and foam packaging](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/polystyrene/) — General waste almost everywhere. It is recyclable in principle and collected almost nowhere.

## Hazardous waste collection

- [Asbestos](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/asbestos/) — Do not break it, do not drill it, do not sweep it. It needs a licensed route, and most household waste centres take it only by prior arrangement.

## Food waste collection

## Kerbside recycling bin

- [Aerosol cans](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/aerosols/) — Empty aerosols go in the kerbside recycling in most areas. Never pierce them, never crush them, never bin a part-full one.
- [Wrapping paper](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/wrapping-paper/) — Plain paper: recycle. Foil, plastic-coated or glittery: general waste. The scrunch test settles it.
- [Drinks cartons (Tetra Pak)](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/cartons/) — Recyclable, but only where your scheme says so — they need a mill that separates the card from the plastic and foil.
- [Aluminium foil and foil trays](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/foil/) — Recyclable if it is clean. Scrunch it into a ball the size of a fist so the sorters can see it.
- [Shredded paper](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/shredded-paper/) — Depends entirely on your council. Loose shreds jam sorting lines; where they are accepted it is usually bagged or in food waste.
- [Plastic bottle caps](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/bottle-caps/) — Leave the cap on the empty bottle. That is now the standard advice in most places.

## Donate or reuse

- [Furniture (sofas, wardrobes, tables)](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/furniture/) — Reuse first — charities collect free. Otherwise a bulky collection or the household waste centre.
- [Shoes and trainers](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/shoes/) — Pair them, tie them together, and put them in a shoe or textile bank. Never in the bin.
- [Duvets and pillows](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/duvets-pillows/) — Not the textile bank. Animal shelters take clean ones; otherwise household waste centre or general waste.
- [Books](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/books/) — Charity shop, book bank or a street library. Paperbacks are recyclable as paper; hardbacks need the boards removing.
- [CDs, DVDs and cases](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/cds-dvds/) — Not kerbside recyclable. Donate playable discs; the polycarbonate needs a specialist and the cases are usually accepted separately.

## Common questions

### Where do batteries go?

A collection point at a supermarket, electrical retailer or household waste site — never any household bin. Lithium cells crushed in a truck can ignite, and battery fires are a leading cause of waste-facility fires.

### Can broken drinking glasses go in glass recycling?

No. Drinking glass and Pyrex have a different melting point from bottle glass, and one heat-resistant fragment can ruin an entire batch. They go in general waste, wrapped.

### Why do rules differ between councils?

Because collection depends on which sorting facility the material goes to and what that facility can process. The reasoning on each page is what transfers; the specific bin may not.
