Expanded polystyrene is about 98% air, so a lorry-load of it weighs almost nothing and hauling it any distance costs more than the material is worth. That economics, not chemistry, is why kerbside schemes refuse it: densifying equipment exists but is concentrated at a small number of sites. A few household waste centres and some shops that sell large appliances accept clean EPS packaging, and that is worth a check locally. Foam food trays and takeaway boxes are further ruled out by food contamination, and go in general waste.

## How to prepare it

1. Check whether a nearby household waste centre has an EPS bank — a minority do.
2. Break it down inside a bag; it sheds beads everywhere.

- Never put polystyrene in the kerbside recycling; it breaks into beads that contaminate every other stream.
- Never burn it — polystyrene burns with heavy sooty smoke and styrene fumes.
