Anything with a motor, a plug or a battery is electrical waste rather than scrap and goes to the WEEE cage instead, and sealed vessels — gas cylinders, aerosols, extinguishers — must be kept out of scrap entirely because they explode when the load is sheared or baled. In the UK, selling scrap requires ID under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, which is worth knowing before turning up expecting cash. Whether your council also collects scrap at the kerb varies, so check the local list.

## How to prepare it

1. Separate anything electrical, pressurised or containing a battery out of the scrap pile.
2. Take ID if you are selling scrap in the UK; cash payment is prohibited.
