# Where do Needles, syringes and lancets go?

**Where do Needles, syringes and lancets go?: A rigid sharps bin, returned through the route your prescriber or council specifies. Never loose in any bin.**

Bulky or special collection

Loose needles injure waste and recycling workers, and a needlestick from an unknown source means bloodborne-virus testing and prophylaxis for the person who found it. Sharps go straight into an FDA-cleared sharps container, or failing that a heavy-duty plastic bottle with a screw cap that is labelled and never recycled. How full containers are collected differs completely by area: some councils run a free clinical-waste collection, some pharmacies take them, some require a hospital drop-off, and in parts of the US it is a mail-back programme. Ask your pharmacist or your council before the container is full, not after.

## How to prepare it

1. Drop the sharp in point-first, immediately after use.
2. Close the container at the fill line, never past it.
3. Label an improvised container clearly if no proper bin is available.

## What not to do

- Never put loose needles in a bin bag — they go through the bag and into a hand.
- Never recycle a sharps container or the bottle standing in for one.
- Never recap a needle by holding the cap in your fingers.
