Why that route, what goes wrong on the wrong one, and ho" url: https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/sharps/ site: "At One Place" --- # Where do Needles, syringes and lancets go? **Where do Needles, syringes and lancets go?: A rigid sharps bin, returned through the route your prescriber or council specifies. Never loose in any bin.** Bulky or special collection Loose needles injure waste and recycling workers, and a needlestick from an unknown source means bloodborne-virus testing and prophylaxis for the person who found it. Sharps go straight into an FDA-cleared sharps container, or failing that a heavy-duty plastic bottle with a screw cap that is labelled and never recycled. How full containers are collected differs completely by area: some councils run a free clinical-waste collection, some pharmacies take them, some require a hospital drop-off, and in parts of the US it is a mail-back programme. Ask your pharmacist or your council before the container is full, not after. ## How to prepare it 1. Drop the sharp in point-first, immediately after use. 2. Close the container at the fill line, never past it. 3. Label an improvised container clearly if no proper bin is available. ## What not to do - Never put loose needles in a bin bag — they go through the bag and into a hand. - Never recycle a sharps container or the bottle standing in for one. - Never recap a needle by holding the cap in your fingers. > Kerbside collection rules genuinely vary by council and county, and local rules always win over general guidance. The reasoning above is what transfers — if your service differs, it will usually be for a reason described here. ## Other things that go to bulky or special collection - [Fridges and freezers](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/fridges/) — A licensed handler has to remove the refrigerant first. Household waste centre or a council collection — never a scrap man with a van. - [Mattresses](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/mattresses/) — Council bulky collection, a household waste centre, or a mattress recycler. Almost all of it is recoverable, and none of it belongs in a lay-by. - [Large appliances (washing machines, cookers, dishwashers)](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/large-appliances/) — Household waste centre, a council bulky collection, or the retailer delivering the replacement. - [Carpet and underlay](https://atoneplace.net/where-does-it-go/carpet/) — Household waste centre or a bulky collection. Cut into manageable rolls first. ## Common questions ### Where do Needles, syringes and lancets go? A rigid sharps bin, returned through the route your prescriber or council specifies.
