Beyond flexibility, the material matters enormously. Natural rubber, nitrile and neoprene bond readily once abraded and degreased. Silicone rubber and EPDM do not — silicone sits at roughly 20-24 mN/m surface energy, in the same territory as PTFE, so it rejects adhesives for the same reason polypropylene does, and EPDM is a saturated hydrocarbon with nothing chemically reactive on the surface. Abrade the bonding face with 120 grit — rubber often carries mould release from manufacture 2. Degrease with isopropanol, not white spirit, which leaves a residue 3. With contact cement, coat both faces, wait until touch-dry, then press hard: pressure, not clamping time, makes the bond 4. Roll or hammer the joint through a cloth to get intimate contact across the whole area ## What goes wrong - Epoxy on anything that flexes - Expecting any general adhesive to hold cured silicone rubber - Bonding a rubber part that carries pressure or load, such as a hose under pressure > Compiled practical guidance rather than a published standard.
