Why it looks like this
Plainly, and on purpose. There are no custom fonts, no animation and almost no JavaScript, which is why pages appear immediately even on a slow connection. The answer is at the top of every page because that is what you came for.
How it is funded
Advertising, through Google AdSense. There is no paywall, no account and no newsletter. Ads are placed in fixed positions that are reserved before the page loads, so nothing moves under your cursor, and never next to buttons or links where you might hit one by accident.
Where the numbers come from
Published sources, cited on every page. Where the honest answer is a range rather than a single number, you get the range. The methodology page explains how figures are compiled and, just as importantly, where they are weakest.
