Why there are no winners here

"Who would win" is the question people arrive with, and it deserves a straight answer: nobody knows, and a number cannot tell you. Encounters turn on who initiates, whether either animal is hungry, injured, cornered or defending young, and what the terrain rewards. What these pages can do honestly is show every measured advantage — and the interesting cases are the ones where the measures disagree. A gorilla outweighs a leopard several times over and loses to it on every speed measure. A hippopotamus beats almost everything on bite force while being among the least agile animals in the set.

Common questions

Who would win, a lion or a tiger?
No measurement settles it. Tigers are heavier on average and lions live in groups while tigers are solitary, which matters more than either statistic. In the wild their ranges barely overlap, so the encounter is close to hypothetical.
Why do these pages not pick a winner?
Because an outcome is not a fact. Every figure here is measured and sourced; a predicted winner would be invented, and putting an invention next to sourced numbers makes it look equally solid.
What has the strongest bite?
Among living animals, the saltwater crocodile, by a wide margin. Bite force alone does not decide encounters — it says nothing about speed, reach or willingness to engage.
