What actually changed

  • Connection speed went from 9.6 kbps to 100 Mbps — a factor of about 10,417.
  • A gigabyte of storage went from $9,000 to $0.020 — a factor of about 450,000.
  • The web went from 1 hostname to 1,295,973,827.
  • A 4 GB film went from 40 days to 6 minutes.

The storage figure is the one that explains the most. Almost everything that felt impossible in one decade and ordinary in the next — free webmail with a gigabyte, a thousand songs in a pocket, video hosting given away — became possible because storage got cheap faster than anything else did.

Common questions

How long did it take to download a song on dial-up?
A three-minute MP3 at 56 kbps took roughly seven minutes, and at the 28.8 kbps typical in 1995 about fourteen. Real throughput was 10 to 20 per cent below the modem rating once protocol overhead is counted.
How many websites were there in the beginning?
One, in 1991, at CERN. About 130 by the end of 1993 and 23,500 by the end of 1995. The web passed a billion hostnames in 2016.
Why does the number of websites go down in some years?
Because the figure counts hostnames responding to HTTP, not distinct websites. When a large domain-parking operator shuts down it removes tens of millions of hostnames at once, which is what happened in 2010 and again in 2013.
