Abu Dhabi has US preclearance, the only airport in the Middle East that does, so passengers to the United States arrive as domestic. The facility was controversial in Washington precisely because it gave one Gulf carrier an advantage no US airline could match.

The other code, OMAA

Every airport has two codes. The three-letter IATA code, AUH, is the one on your boarding pass and your luggage tag, and it is assigned for commercial use. The four-letter ICAO code, OMAA, is the one pilots and controllers use, and it is assigned geographically: the first letter or two identify the region, so every airport in the same part of the world shares a prefix. That is why OMAA looks nothing like AUH.
