American black bear vs bald eagle
North America's most common bear, and the one most people actually encounter. The national bird of the United States, recovered from about 400 nesting pairs in 1963 to over 70,000 today. On the measurements below, American black bear leads on more of them — but they do not all point the same way, and the ones that disagree are the interesting part.
The measurements
| American black bear | bald eagle | |
|---|---|---|
| Mass | 40–280 kg | 3–6.3 kg |
| Length | 1.2–2 m | 0.7–1 m |
| Height | 0.7–1 m | — |
| Top speed | 48 km/h | 56–160 km/h |
| Lifespan | 18–30 yr | 15–38 yr |
Where each one leads
- Mass: American black bear is 29× heavier.
- Length: American black bear is 1.9× longer.
- Top speed: bald eagle is 3.3× faster.
- Lifespan: near enough identical.
What this does and does not tell you
These are measured averages with real ranges behind them, and every figure links to its own page. What they cannot do is settle an encounter. Outcomes between animals turn on circumstance — who initiates, whether either is hungry, defending young, injured or cornered, and what the terrain favours. Size and bite force are not decisive on their own, and most of these pairs never meet in the wild in any case, because their ranges do not overlap.
Every figure here is an average with a substantial spread. Individual animals vary enormously — a large individual of the smaller species routinely exceeds a small individual of the larger one.
Common questions
- Is a American black bear bigger than a bald eagle?
- American black bear is heavier — 40–280 kg against 3–6.3 kg.
- Who would win, a American black bear or a bald eagle?
- That is not something measurements can settle. The comparison above shows which animal leads on each measure, but an actual encounter depends on circumstance, motivation, health and terrain — and most pairs like this never meet in the wild.
