Sensory systems convert physical or chemical stimuli into nerve signals. The traditional five — sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch — leave out several that are equally distinct.

Worth knowing
The omissions are substantial. Proprioception — knowing where your limbs are without looking — has its own receptors and is what lets you touch your nose with your eyes shut. The vestibular sense handles balance and acceleration. Thermoception, nociception (pain), and the interoceptive senses of hunger, thirst and needing the lavatory all have distinct receptor types and pathways.
A common claim that is wrong
The five-senses framing comes from Aristotle and does not reflect the anatomy. Touch alone covers at least four separate receptor systems for pressure, vibration, temperature and pain.
