Cobalt sits at the centre of vitamin B12, the only vitamin containing a metal, and the only one animals cannot get from plants — it is made by bacteria. Its blue compounds have coloured glass and pottery since at least ancient Egypt, and the name comes from Kobold, the German mine goblin blamed by miners whose "silver" ore smelted into worthless, arsenic-fuming slag. Roughly 70% of world supply now comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a concentration that makes battery supply chains nervous.
