The flag of Sudan
The flag of Sudan
Three equal horizontal bands of red, white and black, with a green triangle at the hoist.
Ratio 1:2 · current design adopted 1970
The flag combines the Arab Liberation colours of Egypt with a green triangle in the Pan-Arab pattern of Jordan and Palestine, which is why it sits in both families at once. The name Sudan comes from bilad as-sudan, "land of the blacks", and the black band refers to it directly. The flag adopted at independence in 1956 was blue, yellow and green and lasted fourteen years. South Sudan's flag, adopted in 2011, uses a different colour set and a blue triangle.
