Footwear: coated leather
Footwear: coated leather
That part is leather with a surface coating no thicker than a third of the total thickness.
What it looks like
The same stretched hide shape with a magnified segment or a diagonal split drawn across one corner.
What it means
The coating limit is what separates coated leather from a plastic-coated material that no longer counts as leather at all. Patent finishes and heavily pigmented corrected grains sit here. In wear the coating is the part that fails: it cracks along flex lines rather than developing a patina, and conditioners intended for uncoated leather cannot penetrate it.
Defined by Directive 94/11/EC on footwear labelling. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
