What it looks like
A lowercase letter e in a rounded, italic style, printed immediately after the weight or volume.
What it means
It is not a decorative flourish and it is not an "E number". The e-mark says the packer runs a statistical quality system in which the average content of the batch is at least the stated quantity, no more than a small proportion falls below a defined tolerable negative error, and none falls below twice it. In return the pack can circulate across the EU without individual re-weighing. Its practical meaning to a shopper: an individual pack may legitimately be a fraction under the stated weight, but the batch average may not be.
Defined by EU Directive 76/211/EEC. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
