Meta tag generator
Generate title, description, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags.
How it works
Fill in the fields and this produces the head tags: title, meta description, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter Card, plus viewport and charset.
The length counters are the useful part. Google truncates titles at roughly 580 pixels — about 55 to 60 characters in practice, though it depends on the characters, since capital letters and wide letters use more room. Descriptions get around 155 to 160. Neither is a hard limit and being over one is not a penalty; it just means the tail gets cut, so the important words belong at the front.
Meta descriptions are not a ranking factor and have not been for many years. They influence click-through rate, which is worth optimising for its own sake, but no amount of keyword stuffing in one affects position. Google also rewrites descriptions for a large share of results when it judges the page has a better-matching snippet.
The meta keywords tag is dead. Google stopped using it in 2009 and announced as much publicly. It is not included here.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, logged or stored, and the page keeps working with the network disconnected.
Common questions
- How long should a meta description be?
- Around 155–160 characters before truncation, though the real limit is pixel width. Put the important words first, since the tail is what gets cut.
- Do meta keywords still matter?
- No. Google confirmed in 2009 that it ignores the keywords tag, and no major engine uses it.
- Does the meta description affect rankings?
- No, only click-through rate. Google frequently rewrites it anyway when it finds a passage on the page that better matches the query.
