Wooden drawers usually stick for one of two reasons and only one of them is friction. Humidity swells the timber across the grain, so a drawer that was fine in February binds in August, and no lubricant fixes that — a shaving off the top edge of the sides does. Genuine friction on a dry runner is what wax solves, and it works because wax is a solid lubricant that stays on the surface without penetrating. Oil does the opposite, wicking into the end grain and staying there. On metal runners, a bent slide, a dropped cabinet or a screw working loose accounts for most stickiness, and it is worth checking the alignment before reaching for a spray.
